Salt
Salt is the main ingredient an irreplaceable in every household. Although seemingly the product is simple, there are a few facts that we would like to draw your attention to in order to inform you:
Why you should use iodated salt,
What you need to be aware of when you buy salt,
How you should store and use it.
Iodine is very important for us. It is essential to our diet because it is a significant part of the chemical structure of the hormones produced by the thyroid gland. If the body does not get enough iodine, the thyroid gland cannot produce the optimal quantity of these hormones, which results in many consequences which vary, depending on the age.
During pregnancy and immediately prior to birth, there is possible danger of: miscarriage, premature delivery, increased infant mortality, genetic anomalies, damaged hearing and speech, mental and physical development problems.
In childhood and puberty, the possible problems may be: thyroid problems, slow physical development and mental retardation of various degrees.
In adults, iodine deficiency can cause thyroid problems, slow function of the thyroid gland, damage of the metal functions and decreased reproductivity. All these consequences can be successfully avoided by using iodized, food grade salt.
For that purpose, in 1999, in the Republic of Macedonia, a legal regulation was adopted according to which food grade salt must be iodised with potassium iodide (20-30 mg iodine per 1 kg of salt).
The content of the iodine is gradually decreased. Humidity, high temperatures and direct sunlight speed up the process of iodine loss. These influences can be eliminated by using adequate packaging and containers for storing salt (non-porous packaging, room temperature and light protection). A factor that positively affects iodine stability in salt is the refinement of the salt (refined from hygroscopic and metal impurities).
It is our obligation to:
Provide high-quality, refined, iodized salt,
To pack the salt in appropriate packaging that will keep out humidity and light.
It is your responsibility to:
Keep the salt in tightly sealed containers, protected from humidity, heat and light,
To add the salt at the end of the cooking process,
Buy salt in quantities up to 1 kg,
When buying salt, look for the date of iodisation.
Health is our priority!
