ALKALOID at the Forefront of Sustainable Development

“We will continue to live with the challenges of today, but our thinking must reach far beyond them. Alkaloid is built not only for today and tomorrow, but for the many generations to come.” These words, spoken by Trajche Mukaetov in January 1986, embody a vision of responsible governance, shared commitment, and long-term value creation – principles that are now widely recognized as core elements of the ESG concept.

The Sustainability Business Forum gathered representatives from the corporate sector, public institutions, civil society, and the media to discuss emerging sustainability trends and the role of businesses in addressing the country’s most pressing development priorities.

“For companies in our country and across the region, the implementation of ESG principles is no longer a matter of choice, but a strategic step towards sustainable growth and enhanced competitiveness in the global marketplace,” emphasized Alkaloid’s Chief Executive Officer and MB President, Zhivko Mukaetov, who participated in the Forum as the keynote speaker.

“For Alkaloid, ESG standards are an integral part of day-to-day operations and a strategic driver for managing risks, fostering innovation, ensuring long-term competitiveness, building investor confidence, and securing access to sustainable financing. Today, true leadership is measured not only by financial performance, but also by the impact a company has on the environment, people, and the community,” noted Mukaetov, stressing the benefits of implementing ESG principles across the company.

He highlighted that investments in environmental protection and sustainable practices delivered measurable results in 2025. Renewable electricity accounted for 73.24% of total electricity consumption, and efficiency measures saved 21.35 million liters of water. During the same period, the company eliminated the use of 179,000 plastic bottles. Alkaloid’s social responsibility initiatives continued to generate significant value. Through the Trajche Mukaetov Foundation, 739 scholarship recipients have been supported over the past 17 years, representing a total investment of nearly MKD 151 million. In addition, EUR 3.7 million was allocated in 2025 to projects and initiatives in healthcare, culture, and sports.

Highlighting that the company’s economic contribution remains instrumental in driving local development, Mukaetov pointed out that Alkaloid distributed EUR 51.5 million in 2025 through employee compensation, related contributions and benefits, along with shareholder dividends. The company also contributed EUR 32 million to the state budget through taxes and contribution payments. In support of the domestic economy, cooperation with more than 1,960 local suppliers generated payments totaling EUR 52.5 million for locally sourced products and services.

Alkaloid published its inaugural ESG Report in April 2023. In recognition of these efforts, the company received the 2024 Good ESG Practices Award in 2025 from the Macedonian Stock Exchange and the American Chamber of Commerce for its latest Group-level consolidated ESG Report.

During the Forum, Alkaloid AD Skopje was presented with the Gender-Responsive Family Policies Award for large companies, while Alkaloid’s Chief Executive Officer and MB President, Zhivko Mukaetov, received the Sustainable Development Leadership Award.

The Sustainability Business Forum was organized by Konect’s Responsible Business Club, in partnership with the Ministry of Economy and Labour of the Republic of North Macedonia and UNFPA, with support from the Austrian Development Agency (ADA).
