Action

Vitamin D is a liposoluble vitamin that can be synthesized in the skin under the action of UV light. It is converted to 25 (OH) D in the liver and activated to calcitriol - 1,25 (OH) 2 D in the kidney or other organs.

It is involved in bone metabolism and increases the absorption of calcium from the intestines, but also has a very important role in the normal immune response. Vitamin D performs immunomodulatory activities. Studies have demonstrated it’s ability to support the immune system and fight against pathogen microorganisms.

Vitamin D reaches its lowest level in the winter months and is often referred by the scientists as a "seasonal stimulus", as low levels of vitamin D are associated with an increased incidence of respiratory infections.
