Zhivko Mukaetov, CEO and MB President of Alkaloid AD Skopje, participated in the 3rd AmCham Healthcare Conference, titled “Driving societal value through healthcare”. Speaking on the panel dedicated to business community representatives as contributors to building a healthier society, Mukaetov emphasized that Alkaloid places support for Macedonian healthcare and pharmacy at the top of its priorities. He cited examples such as €1.2 million in donations to healthcare facilities, institutions, and individuals during the 2020/2021 COVID-19 crisis, along with ongoing support from the Trajche Mukaetov Foundation, which has granted scholarships to top pharmacy and medical students at the state university over the past 16 years, with over 130 million denars dedicated to these initiatives.

When asked about how Alkaloid balances the costs of implementing sustainable corporate practices, research and development, with the long-term benefits they bring both the company and the broader society, Mukaetov explained that Alkaloid, as a company that supports nearly 3,000 families and lists more than 1000 domestic companies, considers investments as essential for growth, development, and brand globalization:

„In these challenging times, we must recognize the importance of domestic manufacturing industries and their contribution to the country. We started the R&D segment basically from scratch back in 2009. Today, we have nearly 200 highly qualified professionals working in the R&D Institute. In recent years, Alkaloid has embarked on a process of redesigning existing generic pharmaceutical products for new indications. This resulted in the successful development of Alkaloid’s first patented value-added medicine - liquid ompeprazole, for which we already sold licenses to partners in most of the EU markets. We have just released the first placements for the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands.“ – said Mukaetov. 

When asked about patient access to medicines and innovative treatments that could more effectively contribute to greater societal benefit, Mukaetov highlighted the importance of generic pharmaceutical manufacturers in terms of affordability. He further stressed that the medicines covered by healthcare systems should align with the number of patients diagnosed with specific diseases, which necessitates an integrated database: 

„We need a balanced healthcare system that should be smartly dimensioned according to the financial conditions of the country, to which inclusively and in an organized manner – all stakeholders would contribute, for the same to be efficient and sustainable “ – noted Mukaetov.

The 3rd AmCham Healthcare Conference focused on promoting healthier communities, driving economic growth, and improving overall quality of life through the combined efforts of various stakeholders, including government institutions, international organizations, and the business community.
